Compass Sculpture, Princes Walk, Hull
A wood carving to commemorate the historic activities of the City. In the form of four ‘ships
figureheads’, pointing to the cardinal points of the compass (the developers of the site have a
compass rose as their logo). The ‘northern’ figure holds a whale (symbolising the 18th century
whaling industry); the ‘southern’ figure holds exotic fruit (Fyffes’ bananas); the ‘western’ figure holds
a sheaf of grain (the export of wheat from the hinterland of Hull to Eastern Europe); and the
eastern’ figure holds a fish (the importance of fishing to the area).
I also built a functional shoeshine seat for the shopping centre
